Without an account
- You can use the whole map without signing in. We don't ask for or store anything about you.
- Places you save, places you mark as Been here, and settings like how the list is grouped, are kept in your own browser (local storage) and never sent to us. If you later sign in, the places saved and marked in that browser are added to your account (see below).
- Your location: when you open the site, your browser asks whether to share it. If you allow it, it's only used inside your browser to show where you are, which place is closest and how far each one is; your position is never sent to us or stored. If you say no, we don't ask again on that device (the location button still works). Like any online map, the map pictures for the area on your screen load from OpenFreeMap, so when the map shows your area they can tell roughly which area is being viewed, though not your position.
- When someone opens a link to a creator's picks, a shared list or a place, we add one to a daily count for that link (and a separate count when an app like X, Discord or LINE builds a preview of it). Friend and guild invite links are counted all together, not one by one. Only the number is kept: nothing about who opened it, their address or their device.
With an account
If you sign in with Twitch, Discord or Google, we store:
- your account ID at that service, your display name and a link to your profile picture (or, if you choose your own picture under Me, that picture, kept as a small 256 ร 256 copy; the link to your sign-in picture is kept so you can switch back, and your own picture is deleted when you do). If someone reports your picture, we keep the report (who reported it and why) until we've looked at it. The first time you sign in we ask what to call you; once you choose a name, that's the one we show (change it any time under Me), and signing in again doesn't replace it
- the places you like, the places you save and the places you mark as Been here
- your friends, your invite link, and whether you hide your check-ins from them
- which days you used the site (just the date, for unlocking guilds), the guilds you start or join, the places you add to them, your rank there and which badge you show
- for your ๐ alerts: who added you as a friend and when, and up to when you've read or cleared your alerts (alerts are kept 30 days)
- places of your own that you add (name, spot on the map, and the link, address and note if you give them), and the lists you make, follow or report (and which of your lists you've hidden from the map)
- a sign-in session (a random code; we only keep a scrambled copy of it)
We also note roughly when you last used the site (at most every few hours), so we can count how many people use it. We use these only to sign you in, show your name and picture, count your like once, and keep your saved places, own places and lists on every device. We don't get your email, password or friends list, we don't sell your information, and there are no ads or tracking.
Your own places and lists
- Places you add yourself and lists you make are private: only you can see them, unless you share a list by link or switch on sharing for a place with one of your guilds (see Guilds).
- If you import a file of places, it's read in your browser; only the places in it (name, spot on the map, and the address, link and note if the file has them) are sent to us and kept as your own places in a new list. The file itself isn't uploaded or kept.
- When you share a list, anyone with its link can see the list's name, everything in it (including your own places in it and your notes on them) and your display name and profile picture. When the link is posted somewhere like X, Discord or LINE, its preview shows the list's name, your display name and picture, and how many places it has. The link is long and random and isn't listed anywhere on the site, but whoever has it can pass it on.
- Stop sharing or delete the list at any time and the link stops working straight away, including for people who followed it. People who already made a copy keep their copy.
- If you follow or copy someone's list, they aren't told who you are.
- If you report a list, we keep the report (your account and what you wrote) so we can check it. Lists that break the rules may be removed.
- When you look up a place from a link, we fetch that map page to find the spot. We don't keep the page.
Friends
- You add a friend by sending them your invite link, or by opening theirs. Nobody becomes your friend without one of you opening the other's link and saying yes.
- Anyone who opens your invite link sees your display name and profile picture, so they know who invited them.
- Friends see each other's Been here places and progress, and each other's shared lists. Nobody else sees your check-ins. Your private lists and saved places stay private.
- Untick Show my check-ins to my friends at any time to hide them. Remove a friend, or Reset my invite link so an old link stops working, whenever you like. Removing works both ways and they aren't told.
Guilds
- Guilds unlock after 7 active days. We count a day when you open the site signed in, and keep only the date.
- Guilds are joined by link and aren't listed anywhere. Anyone with a guild's link can see its name, badge and how many members and places it has.
- Members see each other's display names, profile pictures and ranks, who started the guild, how many places each person added, and the guild's list. They don't see your check-ins (only friends do), your private lists or your saved places.
- If you share one of your own places with a guild, its members see that place (name, spot, address, link and your note) and that you shared it. Your other places stay private. Leaving the guild, turning the switch off or deleting the place stops sharing it.
- Your guild's badge (and your rank there) shows next to your name wherever your name appears: to your friends, on lists you share, and in your guilds. Choose which guild's badge to show, or none, in the Guilds tab.
- You can leave a guild any time. Its owner can remove members, change ranks (including the rank everyone gets by default), or delete it. If you started it, deleting your account deletes it too.
- If you report a guild, we keep the report (your account and what you wrote) so we can check it.
Creators on the map
- If you're one of the creators whose picks are on the map, the OniGiri team can link your account to your creator profile so you can add your own picks. To do that, the team sees your account's display name, sign-in service and when you last used the site.
- Picks you add are public, under your creator name. We note which account added each one. If your account is deleted or unlinked, your picks stay on the map as your creator's picks; ask the team to remove them.

Where your data is kept
The site and its database run on Cloudflare, which has data centres around the world, including outside Japan. Like any website host, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver pages and may keep short-lived logs. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, and if a place shows a Google card it loads from Google; those services also see your IP address.
Keeping and deleting
- Your account stays until you delete it. Sessions you stop using expire after 30 days.
- To delete everything: open the Me tab and choose Delete my account. Your account, your own picture, likes, saved places, check-ins, friends, alerts, invite link, active days, guilds you started, the places you added to guilds, own places, lists, follows and sessions are removed straight away, and links to lists you shared stop working.
- You can also remove the site's access from your Twitch, Discord or Google account settings at any time.
