Help & FAQ

Last updated 23 October 2026

Giri Eats is a map of restaurants recommended by OniGiri's streamer and YouTuber friends (we call them creators). You can use all of the map without an account; signing in adds lists, friends and guilds.

How to use it

Everything is in five tabs (along the bottom on a phone, at the top of the list on a computer):

Open something in a tab (a list, a guild, a friend's places) and it shows on the map and in the list; ← above it goes back. Each tab remembers where you were.

On a phone

  1. Open girieats.com. The map fills the screen; the OniGiri logo above the tabs is the handle for the list.
  2. Drag the logo up (or tap it) to open the list, drag it down to see the whole map.
  3. Swipe the row of creators and tap one to see only their picks. Tap them again, or Everyone, to see all.
  4. Tap a pin or a place in the list: its card shows who recommended it, what to order, photos, and a button to open it in Google Maps.
  5. In the card: β˜† Save to keep it (in β˜… Bookmarked, a list or a guild), Been here? once you've eaten there, Send to pass it to a friend.
  6. Everything you keep is under the My places tab.

On a computer

  1. The list is on the left. The creators dropdown at the top lets you tick one or several creators.
  2. Hover a pin for a quick preview, click it for the full card.
  3. The β€Ή button hides the list for the whole map.

The map

What do the bubbles and numbers mean?

Each bubble is a place, with the face of a creator who picked it. A yellow number on it means several creators picked the same place. A bubble with stacked faces is a group of places close together; its number is how many. Tap it to zoom in. When several creators picked a place, whose face shows is picked at random each visit.

How do I see where I am and how far a place is?

When you open Giri Eats your browser asks whether to share your location. Allow it and a blue dot shows you, a message names the closest place, the map shows you with the nearest places, and each place says how far it is and how long the walk takes. (Opened from a link to a place or list, the map stays on that.) Say no and we won't ask again on that device. You can always tap the round location button (the target, top right) instead: tap it to follow you as you walk and turn on the arrow for the way you're facing, again to turn it off. Your position stays on your device: it's never sent to us.

What's the πŸ”” on the map?

Your alerts. A number on the bell means something new. Tap it to see news from Giri Eats and, once you're signed in: places your guild members add (several at once show as one line), people joining a guild you started, and people who add you as a friend (see their places or remove them right there). Tap an alert to go to it. Clear all empties the box; new alerts still come in. Alerts are kept for 30 days.

Can I change how it looks?

Tap the Me tab β†’ Colour theme: Light or Dark, plus Halloween in October and Christmas in December. Your device remembers it.

What happens when I turn my phone sideways?

The list becomes a card down the left side with the map beside it. The β€Ή button in its corner hides it. Turn the phone back and the list returns to the bottom.

Finding places

How do I see one creator's picks?

On a phone, tap their name in the row of creators (the nearest picks come first). On a computer, open the creators dropdown and tick one or several. Clear all (beside the find box), the βœ• on the closed dropdown, or Everyone shows all of them again. The address in your browser keeps your choice, so you can share it.

What can I search for?

A place's name, an area, a country, a creator, a dish or a food type, in English or Japanese (for example "ramen", "Shibuya", "ζΈ‹θ°·", "USA").

How is the list sorted?

Tap Sort:

Once Giri Eats knows where you are (see above), every list is nearest first: the places in each section, and the sections themselves (the area with the closest place on top). Each place shows how far it is and about how long the walk takes, like 350 m · 🚢 5 min (beyond 20 km, just the distance). Popular stays most liked first. Without your location, lists are A to Z.

Tap a section to open it; its pin button shows that section on the map. Your choice is remembered on your device.

A place's card

What's in a place's card?

Every creator who recommended it with their note (often what to order), the creators' food and menu photos (tap one for full screen), what kind of food it is, a button to open it in Google Maps or Tabelog, and the buttons Save, Like, Been here? and Send.

Does it show opening hours?

Places linked to their Google listing show Google's own card in the popup, with photos, rating and opening hours, including holiday changes and whether a place is closed for now or for good. It comes live from Google, so it's only as up to date as the restaurant's own Google listing. Check before you travel far.

How do I send a place to a friend?

Tap Send in its card. On a phone this opens your share menu (LINE, Messages, Discord…); on a computer it copies the link. The link shows a preview card with the place's name when you post it.

Saving & tracking

Can I save places without an account?

Yes. β˜† Save bookmarks it on this device. Sign in and your bookmarks move into your account and follow you to every device.

How do I take a place off my bookmarks or one of my lists?

On a phone, swipe the place to the right and let go once the strip turns solid red. In β˜… Bookmarked it removes the bookmark; in one of your lists it only takes it out of that list; in πŸ“ My pins it deletes your pin. Tap Undo in the message at the top if you change your mind. Anywhere else, open the place, tap Save and untick (or Delete for one of your pins).

How do I see only my bookmarked places?

Tap the My places tab β†’ β˜… Bookmarked. ← My places above the list goes back; the Explore tab shows everything again.

What's in My places?

Everything you keep, in one place:

Tap a row to see just that. The round buttons at the bottom make a New list, Import a file or Add a place.

What does "Been here?" do?

It marks a place as tried (a βœ“ on its pin and in the list). A bar at the top of Explore counts how many you've tried; tap it (or My places β†’ βœ“ Been here) to see them, then "Show the ones I haven't tried" for what's left. Friends can see your tried places (you can turn that off, see Friends).

What are likes for?

Tap β™‘ Like in a place's card (signed in). The total shows as β™₯ in the list, and Popular sorts by it.

Your account

How do I sign in?

Tap the Me tab β†’ Sign in and choose Twitch, Discord or Google. We only get your name and profile picture, never your email or password.

How do I change my name?

The first time you sign in we ask what to call you. Change it any time: Me β†’ Change my name. Names of the site, staff and creators are reserved.

Can I use my own picture?

Yes. Me β†’ tap your picture (the πŸ“·) or Change my picture, and choose one from your device. We cut a square from the middle and make it small. Your friends, guilds and anyone you share a list with see it, and your own places' pins on the map show it. Use my Twitch (or Discord, Google) picture again switches back. Keep it suitable for everyone (see the terms of use). If someone's picture isn't, tap it (in your friends or a guild's Members) β†’ Report picture; we can remove it and stop them choosing another.

How do I delete my account?

Me β†’ Delete my account… (at the bottom). Everything is removed straight away, and links to lists you shared stop working.

Your places & lists

How do I add a place that isn't on the map?

My places β†’ Add a place. Paste a Google Maps (maps.app.goo.gl/…, from Share β†’ Copy link in Google Maps) or Apple Maps link and tap Find, or pick the spot on the map. Add a name and a note, and under Save to pick where it goes (β˜… Bookmarked is ticked to start; untick everything and it's only under πŸ“ My pins). Only you can see it (a coral pin) unless you put it in a shared list or a guild. Open it and tap Edit to change it or move it.

How do I make a list?

My places β†’ New list. Or tap Save on any place and tick the lists to add it to (or + New list there).

How do I share a list?

Open the list β†’ Share. Anyone with the link can see the list, everything in it (your notes too), your name and picture. Stop sharing ends the link straight away.

Someone sent me a list. What can I do with it?

Follow it (it stays up to date under My places β†’ Following), Copy to my lists (your own copy to change), or Report it under β‹― if something's wrong.

Which of my places are on the main map? (the πŸ‘)

In My places, the πŸ‘ beside β˜… Bookmarked, each list, each guild and each list you follow says whether its places are on the main map. Tap it to switch.

Creator picks aren't affected (pick creators in Explore). Opening a row always shows all of it, and the setting follows you to every device.

Are there limits?

500 places of your own, 50 lists, and 500 places in a list.

Importing places

What can I import?

My places β†’ Import. It takes:

You see how many places it found before anything is saved. They go into a new list named after the file. Up to 500 places and 2 MB a file.

Do CSV files need coordinates?

Every place needs a location. GeoJSON files (like Saved Places.json) always have exact coordinates. A CSV doesn't always, so each row needs one of these:

Rows with only a name or an address are skipped (addresses aren't looked up), and so are links with only a "cid" number. The import screen says how many were skipped. If you have both, Saved Places.json is the more exact choice.

How do I get my places out of Google Maps?
  1. Go to takeout.google.com and tap Deselect all.
  2. Tick Saved (your lists, as CSV files) and/or Maps (your places) (starred places, as Saved Places.json).
  3. Export, download and unzip it, then import the file here.
Will importing make duplicates?

No. Places already on Giri Eats are linked to the map's place instead of copied, places you already have aren't added again, and importing the same file twice adds nothing.

An imported spot is in the wrong place. How do I fix it?

That can happen with CSV files that only have Google links (see above). Open the place and tap Edit β†’ move it on the map.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It's read on your device; only the places in it (name, spot, and the address, link and note if it has them) are saved, as your own places.

Friends

How do I add friends?

Tap the Friends tab β†’ Send my invite link. When they open it (and sign in), you're friends.

What do friends see?

Each other's tried places and progress and shared lists, and your friends' faces on the places they've tried ("Mika has been here"). The Friends tab is a small leaderboard; See places beside a friend shows the places they've tried. Untick Show my check-ins to my friends to keep yours private, tap Γ— to remove a friend, or reset your invite link to stop new people joining with the old one.

Guilds

What is a guild?

A group with a name, a badge emoji and one shared restaurant list that every member can add to (tap Save on a place and tick the guild). You join by link only; guilds aren't listed anywhere.

Can I share my own places with my guild?

Yes, one by one. Your pins (places you added yourself) stay private until you tick a guild for them: open the place β†’ Save β†’ under Guild lists, tick the guild (or tick it in the Add a place form). Members then see it in the guild, under Shared in the guild, with your name on it. It's only on their map if they switch that guild's πŸ‘ on, and your other places stay private. Untick it to make it private again. Your lists mark the shared ones with πŸ›‘οΈ.

If you leave the guild or delete the place, it stops being shared. The Guild Master (whoever started the guild) can also take a shared place off the guild.

Why can't I start one yet?

Guilds unlock after 7 active days: seven different days you opened Giri Eats while signed in. The Guilds tab shows how many you have so far. Then you can start up to 5 guilds and be in up to 20.

What are badges and ranks?

Your guild's badge shows next to your name, with your rank there. The Guild Master can make up to 3 ranks, pick one that everyone gets when they join (the default rank), and add up to 3 ✨ special ranks on top, with a shiny gold badge, given out by hand. Pick which guild's badge to show, or none, at the bottom of the Guilds tab.

What can the Guild Master do?

Change the name, badge and ranks, reset the invite link, remove members, or delete the guild. Members can leave, or report a guild that breaks the rules.

For creators

I'm a creator on the map. Can I add my own picks?

Yes. The easiest way: ask the Giri Eats team for a creator invite link, open it, sign in with the account you'll use, check your creator name (and add your channel if you like), and tap Set me up: your profile picture becomes your creator picture, and a short how-to follows. If your channel on the map is on Twitch, simply signing in with that Twitch account also sets you up. Then tap Me β†’ πŸŽ™οΈ My creator picks: paste a map link or pick the spot, add a comment, and it goes on the map under your name straight away. A place already on the map has οΌ‹ Add to my creator picks in its card.

How many picks can I add, and can I change them?

Up to 5 picks (ask the team if you need more). Your picks have Edit comment and Remove my pick in their card.

Privacy & problems

What do you store about me?

Without an account, nothing. With one, only what's needed for your saves, lists, friends and guilds. The details are on the privacy page.

Are there rules?

Yes, the terms of use. In short: picks are people's opinions, so check opening hours and allergens with the place itself; post only what you have the right to post (nothing hateful, sexual, fake or someone else's personal info); creators say so when a pick is sponsored; and no scraping or breaking the site.

The map won't load on my phone.

Giri Eats works on iPhones with iOS 15 or newer and on current Android phones. Try updating your browser, or reloading the page. If it still won't load, tell us (below) which phone you have.

The location button doesn't find me.

Allow location for girieats.com in your browser (on iPhone: Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Location Services β†’ Safari Websites), then tap the button again.
